Kuka murhasi puolison? Kirjava kangas kietoutuu rakastavan hellästi sen alla makaavan ihmisen ylle, piirtäen hahmon kasvonpiirteet pintaansa. Kangas ei kuitenkaan kohoile, sillä sen alla ei enää hengitetä. Seuraavan aamun lööppien riemuisat värit kirjaavat nopeasti tapaukselle nimen: “Puuvillamurha”. Mikkelin puuvillatehtaan johtajana tunnetun Veronikan puoliso Petri on murhattu. Tapaus on järkyttänyt kautta kaupungin: kantaako joku kovana luuna tunnetulle johtajalle kenties kaunaa? Pariskunnan koti ei anna merkkejä lämpimästä avioliitosta, muttei sen enempää henkirikoksestakaan. Etsivien on aika tehdä työnsä, ja seuraavana kohteena on tehtaanjohtajan oma toimisto.
